In response to a request by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials Task Force, on Monday, November 18, 2019 the Illinois Association of Colleges of Nursing (IACN) membership met to discuss the proposed revision of the AACN Essentials. This meeting was held as part of AACN’s “National Faculty Meeting”, a series of self-directed, remote meetings meant to build consensus around the new Essentials, as well as gain input and feedback.
The Essentials outline the nationally agreed upon elements and framework for building nursing curricula. As currently published, the Essentials describe the necessary curriculum content and competencies that are expected from baccalaureate, master’s, and doctor of nursing programs. Additionally, the Essentials outline the clinical support needed for the full range of academic nursing.
The proposed Essentials revision outlines ten domains. They are:
- Knowledge for Nursing Practice
- Person-Centered Care
- Population Health
- Scholarship for Nursing Practice
- Quality and Safety
- Interprofessional Partnerships
- Systems-Based Practice
- Informatics and Healthcare Technologies
- Personal, Professional, and Leadership Development
In this phase of the revision process, IACN will meet once more to discuss the revision, with a meeting pending in late December of 2019 or early January of 2020. IACN membership who cannot attend are invited to submit their feedback to the IACN leadership team directly at firstname.lastname@example.org.
